Background of the 20th Anniversary of the Faculty of Liberal Arts
On the occasion of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Prince of Songkla University—established on September 13, 1997—approaching its 20th anniversary, the Faculty has initiated the “20th Anniversary of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Prince of Songkla University” project. The aim is to organize celebratory activities and to strengthen the relationship between the Faculty and its alumni to mark this special occasion.
History of the Faculty
The concept of establishing the Faculty of Liberal Arts originated during the 5th Higher Education Development Plan and proceeded until the 7th Plan (1993–1996). Prince of Songkla University submitted a proposal to the Ministry of University Affairs to establish the Faculty to support and manage General Education instruction, responding to the university’s goal of producing desirable graduates. This newly established organization aimed to focus on academic development at the graduate level, research advancement, and providing academic services to the local community.
In 1995, the Steering Committee for the Establishment of the Faculty of Liberal Arts submitted the project draft to the university for consideration. The University Council approved the establishment project on November 25, 1995. Subsequently, the proposal was submitted to the Ministry of University Affairs, whose committee approved the establishment of the Faculty of Liberal Arts on January 16, 1997.
On February 11, 1997, the Minister of University Affairs signed the approval for Prince of Songkla University to establish the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The Royal Decree on the Establishment of Administrative Divisions in Prince of Songkla University, Ministry of University Affairs, B.E. 2540 (1997) (Establishment of the Faculty of Liberal Arts) was enacted. It was published in the *Royal Gazette*, Vol. 114, Section 47 Kor, on September 12, 1997, becoming effective the following day. Additionally, the degrees in the field of Liberal Arts were defined, and the Faculty’s official color was designated as Orange-Red, as announced in the *Royal Gazette*, Vol. 116, Section 53 Kor, on June 28, 1999.
The Faculty of Liberal Arts was divided into two government sections: the Department of General Education and the Department of Languages and Linguistics. This was announced in the *Royal Gazette*, Vol. 116, Section 76 Ngor, Page 35, Item 14, on September 23, 1999. Following this, Prince of Songkla University issued Order No. 1543/2542 regarding the transfer of positions and salaries of lecturers and civil servants from the Department of General Education, Faculty of Management Sciences, and the Department of Foreign Languages, Faculty of Science, to be under the Faculty of Liberal Arts, effective from November 17, 1999, onwards.
